Choosing Fixtures and Finishes
It can be difficult to find that perfect fixture and finish for every room in your house. The following are some tips you can use to get that unique look that is all your own:
- What kind of metal and finish is most dominant in each of your rooms? Is there a large amount of copper in your kitchen or brass in your bathroom? This will give you an idea of what you want to include. In a living room or bedroom, match what you already have; bathrooms, however, have a little more mix and match flexibility. You may want to include nickel or chrome finishes in a bathroom that contains mostly brass. Cabinet hinges are a great place to get creative. They don't have to match anything in your bathroom and you can find a style that is unique to your wants and needs.
- If you have a room that contains different metals, then locate mixed metal items for that room. Also, try to merge color schemes with complementary wood finishes. An example would be oak for brass and cherry for copper.
- Pick fabrics that complement the color of your metals or finishes. This is likely going to be determined by your individual style. Just trust your instincts and go with colors and patterns you like.
Door Lock Safety
We all want to protect ourselves and our possessions from burglars, so we have locks on our doors. Quality door locksets will impede a burglar's ability to get inside your house and harm you or steal your goods. The odds are they will attempt to enter through the main entrance of your home or apartment. They might use brute force or a pick to get your door open.
Be prepared. Get a door lock that can withstand these methods and thwart their entrance. Your lock should contain thick and long throw bars. As a means of additional security, use longer screws than the ones that comes with your door lock. Most door locks come with short mounting screws that do not go into the door jamb. You will want a screw that goes deep into the door jamb so any potential burglar would have a much harder time opening the door.
Tips for Quick Cleaning
It can take several hours to properly clean your house from top to bottom. But most of us don't have that kind of time available ... So what are we to do? One thing is for sure, if you spend about 15 to 20 minutes a week doing some quick cleaning up, you will save yourself a lot of time when you need to engage in a deep, thorough cleaning job. The following are some things you can do to keep your home immaculate on a tight schedule.
- Once or twice a week pull stray hairs from your tub. Remove the grime from your sink, faucet and bathtub with an all purpose bathroom cleaner. There is nothing worse than trying to remove caked on soap scum after weeks or even months of letting it build up.
- Clean windows both inside and out with streak free glass cleaner. Wipe door knobs and polish kick plates. Wipe off dirt from base boards and door frame as well as hand prints on glass and light switches.
- In your bedroom, pick up the floor, place clothes in a hamper and make your bed. Close open drawers and place any unnecessary items in the trash to avoid clutter.
- Do a cursory vacuuming once a week to remove dirt, loose carpet fibers, dead insects, etc. Dust lampshades and straighten couch cushions.
Whether you are expecting company at the last minute or simply want to avoid a tedious cleaning job in the future, these steps are a sure-fire way to keep your home neat on a tight schedule!
Benefits of Pocket Doors
One of the biggest advantages to pocket doors is how well they utilize space. If you have a room in either a home or an apartment that has limited room, a pocket door is the best thing you can have to create extra space.
Pocket doors are on tracks and they slide into the wall when you open them. This will not only conserve space, but you can add decoration to any area you felt you needed for storage. There are all kinds to choose from ranging from a pre-assembled unit to a kit. The kit will contain pocket door hardware such as a cage, jamb, and hanger track. They are fairly easy to install yourself but if you would feel more comfortable, you can hire a contractor to install them.
