Cabinet Knobs: Versatile Fixtures

Cabinet knobs
are not only for cabinets anymore! These fixtures can be used creatively in a lot of different ways. The following are some other ways you can use your knobs throughout the house to spruce up your decor:

  1. You may use multiple knobs to create a cool shelving unit. If you insert about three knobs parallel to one another and line up another three a couple of feet below, you can place shelves on them. Then tie some rope to the boards and the knobs and you have yourself a neat place to store books, cds, dvds, etc.
  2. Cabinet knobs can also be used as coat racks. This can be done in a similar fashion as the shelves. Find yourself some knobs in a style you love and place them wherever you would like to hang a coat. You may also use in your kitchen as pot and utensil holders.
  3. Decorative purposes are also a great use for cabinet knobs. The uses listed above are functional but they can be added just about anywhere in your home you want to create a little pizazz.

Dead Bolt Locks

Deadbolts are some of the most secure hardware locksets you can buy in order to increase home safety. They can be used in conjunction with spring locks or they can stand alone to protect your business or home. There are a few different kinds to choose from so it is important to find one that suits your needs.

There is the single cylinder deadbolt. It has a keyhole on the outside only. The double cylinder deadbolt has a key for both sides. One important thing to look at on every deadbolt is how thick the throwbolt is. You want to get one as thick as possible that will fit into the doorjamb. This will deter any possible theft. There are a lot of different styles and grades of protection to choose from when searching for that perfect lock. If you are unsure of what kind of deadbolt will suit your needs, I recommend seeking advice at your local hardware store.

Window Air Conditioners

Window air conditioners are a great replacement for central air conditioners. They are the solution for those who either live in a small apartment or who don't want to incur expensive electrical bills from central air. They work like any regular air conditioner only the fit inside of a window space.

They contain a hot and cool coil and two fans within each unit. The fans blow air over the coils which absorb heat and humidity from the room leaving cool air. These air conditioners are measured in BTU's (British Thermal Units) so you must know what capacity you need for your apartment or home. A baseline measurement for a space of about 400 square feet is approximately 8000 BTU's. This number increases according to the size of the space you want to cool.

These devices are incredibly energy efficient and noise free. Some extra features include timers, dehumidifiers, air filters, and more. You can expect to pay around $70-$150 for basic units. Those with extra bells and whistles can run anywhere from $300 up to $600.

Measure Your Window for Shades

Measuring your window so that you can get the proper window shades is pretty straight forward. You should be very precise in your measurements so that you get enough material. So get out that tape measure and follow these steps:

  1. First have in mind what type of shades you want. Do you want roman, pleated, bamboo, venetian, etc...? Do you want them inside or outside of the window frame?
  2. Use your measuring tape and measure top to bottom and left to right. Then measure the depth of the window frame as this will need to be noted for an inset shade.
  3. If you would like an outset shade, measure from the point of hanging to where you want it to end. Measure side to side noting how far from the window you want your frame to extend.

It is a pretty straightforward process. Remember, it is always better to get a little too much and have to cut it then to have too little and need to purchase all over again!
